A lexically based proposal of argument structure meaning

چکیده
Introduction Children conservatively produce syntactic patterns on a verb-by-verb basis (Akhtar and Tomasello, 1997; Baker, 1979; Bates and MacWhinney, 1987; Bowerman, 1982; Braine, 1976; Brooks and Tomasello, 1999; Gropen et al., 1989; Ingram and Thompson, 1996; Lieven et al., 1997; MacWhinney, 1982; Olguin and Tomasello, 1993; Schlesinger, 1982; Tomasello, 1992). Ultimately, however, generalizations over specific verbs are made, forming speakers’ knowledge of argument structure patterns (Akhtar, 1999; Bowerman, 1982; Brooks and Tomasello, 1999).

Thursday Interdisciplinary Colloquium
Most researchers working on the interface between conceptual categories and argument realization assume that only some aspects of the former are relevant to the latter. These are the only conceptual components relevant for the basic distribution of roots in syntactic structure. I call these Grammatically Relevant Ontological Categories. Among the ongoing challenges are to isolate the grammatica...
متن کاملAddressing the Variability of Natural Language Expression in Sentence Similarity with Semantic Structure of the Sentences
In this paper, we present a new approach that incorporates semantic structure of sentences, in a form of verb-argument structure, to measure semantic similarity between sentences. The variability of natural language expression makes it difficult for existing text similarity measures to accurately identify semantically similar sentences since sentences conveying the same fact or concept may be c...
متن کاملPredicting the Productivity of Argument Structure Constructions
Productivity has been a much-debated concept within morphology and word formation for years, while syntactic productivity has received little attention within the research community. In mainstream syntax, the concept of syntactic productivity is focused on speakers' ability to generate sentences never encountered before. This notion of productivity captures what has been labeled Linguistic Comp...
متن کاملDissociations Between Argument Structure And Grammatical Relations
In Pollard and Sag (1987) and Pollard and Sag (1994:Ch. 1–8), the subcategorized arguments of a head are stored on a single ordered list, the subcat list. However, Borsley (1989) argues that there are various deficiencies in this approach, and suggests that the unified list should be split into separate lists for subjects, complements, and specifiers. This proposal has been widely adopted in wh...
متن کاملNecessities of Developing Diverse Cultural Potentials in Academic Discourse
The absolute hegemony of international code of (academic) communication has resulted in the development and spread of the discoursal voice of the culture form which historical English has emerged, and, as a consequence, any violation from the generic conventions and thinking patterns born out of such a discourse has resulted in the deprivation of non-native thinkers form active participation in...
